Be Cautious About What You Pray For

ODD-US-POPE-ODD

Swiss glacier has been receding for some years.

Apparently the good villagers of Fieserchertal and Fiesch have been praying since 1678 that this Swiss glacier not flood their town with its continued growth. Being Swiss, their prayers have, of course, been finally answered. That looks like a path down the middle of the glacier.

But now they are petitioning Pope Benedict XVI to (more…)

Montana Baseball and Back Roads II: September 09

Montana Highway 200

Before I left home I glanced in the road atlas and saw a thin red line marked 200 coming out of Missoula and heading toward Great Falls, going over Rogers Pass, and through Lincoln on its way. Great road and Lincoln is a pleasant little town geared to hunters, fishermen and snowmobilers.

Their restaurant, the Lambkins I think they called it, had some good soup and really excellent cherry-rhubarb pie. Near here they have a habit of hitting grizzlies out for a stroll on the highways so I kept a lookout for them. None seen today. The view to the right was a traffic jam on this road.

On Thursday evening I stopped in at Centene Park, home of the (more…)

Montana Baseball and Back Roads I: September 09

10 September 2009

I guess one shouldn’t call Interstate 90 a back road but to tell the truth, there is not much difference between the two lane ‘blue highways’ and the Interstate, at least here in Montana, though the two lane highways are often better paved. The heavy trucks are probably the reason the interstates wear out so quickly, another reason we need more and faster rail lines. The picture to the left was made a few months ago.

‘Blue highways’ are in quotes because (more…)

Possible to overload on Staggering OX Food?

For decades, the thought of gouging oneself with food will make the enjoyment better.  Well, that is also true for the following location.  Yep, that’s right, they’re proud to acknowledge that they were  rated to have one of the top 3 sandwiches in the country (for “The Nuke”.) so we had to check out the location and food ourselves.

boys eating some food unlike any other.

boys eating some food unlike any other.

The sandwiches aren’t just unique, they’re downright unheard of and from the groans I heard; are the epitamy of food enjoyment.

The famous Clubfoot™ bun, which is a federally registered trademark. Half the items on the menu are trademarked™ and the other half probably should be aftering smelling them as well.

Being the kids we are, we were delighted to find that we could get hot sandwiches made with no crusts and all white bread. No small feat when you consider it’s nothing more than a Clubfoot roll basically gutted to the spongy inner goodness. They’re fried, baked, cheesy, saucy, and perfect for even the blandest tastes in your mouth… and that’s important when you read the next paragraph.

Why I Ride The Train

Nighthawks—1942 painting by Edward Hopper

The last time I took the Empire Builder east toward Chicago I was reminded of how big and wide  our beautiful country is, and when I arrived in Chicago, surprisingly on time, I found myself only a few blocks from The Art Institute and a special exhibit on Winslow Homer and Edward Hopper. The latter captured my attention, especially in the painting shown above. Hopper was particularly interested in people or things seen through windows, say from passing trains, or people together yet apparently alone, e.g. his iconic Nighthawks, above, with the people sitting in a late night diner and the viewer outside the plate glass window.

The Empire Builder often goes through the backyards of towns I would never otherwise see. I am always curious about what people (more…)
